The film The Circle is about a man from Germany who has lived in the Alps for his entire life. Even as a kid he dreamed about defying gravity and has since made his ambition a reality by becoming a glider pilot. Flying is his life, and being up in the air gives him perspective on what is most important. Driven by his childhood dream, the protagonist is still entranced by flying even four decades after his first flight.
Flying over the Alps these days, he has since learned that sometimes it is just as important to be alone, to enjoy those special moments in nature and to rediscover who he is. He realizes that there are loftier goals than overcoming gravity and that we can only move forward once we have understood that everything in life ultimately comes full circle.
For the aerial shots, the Sony FS7 was affixed in the helicopter using a rubber cord. No gimbal was used. We have been shooting the entire film with a crew of three people and just one camera.
Shooting time: 3 days. This was a tight schedule because of the many different locations and ambitious aerial shots.
Coordinating the action between the helicopter, glider pilot and direction of the light above the clouds was a real challenge, particularly because the glider could only stay up in the air for less than an hour.
There was not sufficient room in the helicopter for changing the lens when flying. This would have been too risky for the camera sensor when filming with an open helicopter door because of the dust, vibrations and wind. For this reason, EVERYTHING was filmed with a single lens. This saved a lot of time and demonstrates what you can achieve with just one lens. This was the leading approach, when we started this project. The lens we have used was: ZEISS LWZ.3 21-100mm/T2.9-T3.9
